Restaurant Review: The Nest – Vivere Hotel & Resorts

In my daily commute to and from work, I know that I am almost home once I see the welcoming sight of the Vivere Hotel.  Its name in neon, set against the dark southern NCR skies has always been a sign that rest and relaxation is no longer far off. It may seem cheesy but Vivere has always been some sort of beacon of home for me. And thanks to Aldous, I had the chance to finally set foot inside this very hotel.  We were invited for a food tasting event at The Nest – Vivere Hotel & Resorts’ idea of dining in the sky.

The Nest Dining in the Sky, located at the 31st floor of the Vivere Hotel provides a great al fresco dining experience, complemented by views of the surrounding metro.

The first food on the table was the Crispy Catfish Salad. Let me get it out there: I love crispy catfish salad.  It is this mixture of green mango, catfish meat flakes, onions, peanuts and cilantro leaves.  All these ingredients result to a blend of textures and tastes that is just awesome.  And it is no wonder why it is The Nest’s best seller.  Not only did their salad taste good, but the serving was also big.  An enjoyable dish with a high score on value for money.

The Mango Salad with Scallops was more like the traditional salad made up mostly of salad greens and feta cheese, then tweaked up with slices of ripe mango and garnished with grilled scallops, wrapped in spinach and bacon.  It is topped with hollandaise sauce and can be tossed with some strawberry vinaigrette.  I love salads that have fruits and this was no exception.  But if forced to choose, the Crispy Catfish Salad wins.

A best seller from the appetizers list would be the Buffalo Chicken Wings, made up of five fried chicken wings served with a blue cheese dressing.  The wings were big and had the right amount of spice.  It’s best eaten with the blue cheese dressing.

The Beef Salpicao, is The Nest’s best-selling dish.  It is made up of beef chunks, cooked in lots of garlic and served with mashed potato.  The beef chunks were really tender and easy to eat and there were lots and lots of garlic chips, cornerstone of a great salpicao.

Another one of The Nest’s best sellers was the Crispy Binagoongan.  This was a huge serving of lechon kawali, simmered in bagoong (shrimp paste), tomatoes and chili.  It comes with some slices of mango that are very useful in cutting the salty taste of the bagoong, as well as a cup of rice.  This dish can feed two hungry people but an extra cup of rice would be in order.

The Pan-Grilled Chicken and Garlic Steak was another garlicky dish but this time, of grilled chicken thigh steaks.  It comes with a cup of rice and chicken drippings.  For me, the chicken drippings made the whole thing too salty, so it’s better not to add it.

For a taste of pasta, we had the Vongole or spaghetti with clams.  For this version of Vongole, The Nest used fresh clams stewed in white wine, olive oil, butter, garlic and chili.  The linguine was home-made and served al dente but it tasted too mild for me. What I loved though was the toasted garlic bread that came with it.

Time and again, I always put a disclaimer when it coms to steak:  I am not a fan.  But in all fairness to the 225g of meltique striploin Bistro Steak, it tasted good; the beef was very tender as expected.  The mashed potatoes that went with it tasted great as well and the presence of corn deserves some special mention.

Throughout this parade of food, I was accompanied by a glass of Lemon Grass Iced Tea.  Dessert was coming up and I was really glad that we were offered some coffee.

First among the desserts was the Decadent Molten Lava Cake with Salted Caramel. I didn’t like it as much as I liked the other desserts though.

Meanwhile, the Mango Crème Brûlée was so good it was sinful!

And last but definitely not the least, was the Frozen Brazo.  Just when I though Brazo de Mercedes could not get any better, it just did.  It’s like the merengue and custard got married, adopted some vanilla-butter ice cream and graham crust and all did a happy dance in my mouth.  I just loved this confection!

Needless to say, I had a pretty great time at The Nest.  I had the chance to chat with one of the cool sisters who own Vivere and we were invited to stay for the sunset.  Unfortunately, my phone was not up to the task.

  9. Yes, sabi ko na nga sa Filinfest ito.. A very good place to visit. If my fund na me, I'll go there with my wife. The foods are just tempting. Never mind the salads , the chicken wings and The Beef Salpicao will just be fine for me.
