Restaurant Review: 12 Monkeys Music Hall & Pub

It was another invite from Aldous of Aldous Ate the World that brought me to 12 Monkeys Music Hall & Pub one night last month.  It was another food tasting event and I guess the primary draw to me had been the chance to see some of the celebrity owners of 12 Monkeys. Yup, 12 Monkeys Music Hall & Pub has an all-star cast of owners, namely, Raymund Magdaluyo, Chito Miranda, Champ Lui Pio, Cesca Rivas, Dj Keith Haw, Jerico Fernando, Dj Tony Toni Bueno, Jinno Rufino, Neil Paras, Neil Arce, Mike Gelacio, Jm Rodriguez, Gp Reyes And Yuri Allado.  The prospect of being able to meet them was just too good to pass up.

12 Monkeys Music Hall & Pub is located at the topmost floor of the Century Mall in Kalayaan in Makati City.  It was my first time at the Century Mall and I must say that that is one cool mall.  The lay-out was great with wide open hallways.  It was not cramped nor crowded even for a Friday night, so it’s definitely a great place for hanging out.  Indeed a great location for the vision of 12 Monkey’s partners:  a proper music hall that features premier bands and live acts, coupled with the finest Filipino-American comfort food, inspired by the partners’ individual tastes and preferences.

Crazy Monkey Stir Fry

That night, 12 Monkeys was trying out its latest concept:  “Crazy Monkey Stir Fry”.  Laid out on a long table was a spread of ingredients for a Mongolian barbeque feast. Aficionados of this do-it-yourself food would surely enjoy mixing and matching all the available ingredients, as well as sampling the very intriguing 12 Monkeys Special Sauce. Since this is an eat-all-you-can buffet, it is guaranteed that you would never be able to come up with something totally the same!

Admittedly, I am no expert in Mongolian barbeques.  I got myself some button mushrooms, shitake mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, green bell pepper, lettuce, shrimp, calamari, brown rice and the 12 Monkeys Special Sauce.  I’m glad to say that despite my inexperience in Mongolian barbeques, my creation still turned out pretty great!

After digesting that heavy meal, we were treated to 12 Monkeys’ signature dish:  St. Peter’s Eggs.  This house specialty is made of sizzling duck eggs with crab fat, sautéed in garlic chili butter sauce.  In layman’s terms, St. Peter’s Eggs are sizzling balut in aligue sauce.  This spicy Indonesian-inspired dish challenges balut eaters and non-eaters alike to imagine eating this streetfood in a music hall.

Another appetizer was the Spam Fries: tempura-style assorted Spam served with honey mustard, cumin ketchup and kimchi mayo.  Though never a fan of Spam, I have to give them points for this ingenuity, giving Spam a more interesting presentation and actually enticing me to try some.  As expected though, it still wasn’t enough to convert me.

Then came Midnight in Pares, braised beef topped with Tamago (grilled egg strips), served with garlic rice and homemade chili oil.  Shrimp paste or bagoong also came with the dish.  A Filipino original, this dish has all the flavors of your typical pares meal.

Picha Pie

Ever had chicharon on your pizza?  Ivan’s Palabok Pizza is sure to bring you an entirely new way of devouring that famous pancit: on a pizza crust!  And yes, it also comes with calamansi.

For a more conventional taste, the recommended pizza would be the Illuminati: topped with spicy pomodoro, salami, prosciutto, pepperoni, peppers and mozzarella cheese and served in a very thin crust.

Another pizza that bears the name of one of the owners is the Chito’s Street Corner Picha Pie.  As the name suggests, this pizza is sure to bring back memories of eating pizza made by your neighbors, or for me, what I’d buy during recess at school.  This pizza has all the goodness of your street corner picha pie:  sweet tomato sauce, ham and Quickmelt cheese!

Last but definitely not the least was GP’s Parma Ham & Truffle Pizza.  Made with truffle cream cheese, asparagus tips, roasted mushrooms, parma ham, parmesan and shaved mozzarella, this pizza has a strong mushroom taste complemented by all that cheese.  It was definitely my favorite!

The Chunky Monkey Pie was to die for.  This banana cream pie topped with whipped cream, chunky peanut butter and crushed choc-nut was the happy ending to my alcohol-free-’cause-I’m-driving night.  It was all I could do to take that slice away and huddle in a corner in eating with sugar-filled bliss.

As I’ve mentioned, I could not sample any of the cocktails, mocktails or what-have-you’s at 12 Monkeys because I was driving.  I was actually very jealous of the other bloggers who were having such fantastic-looking (and -tasting too, I bet) drinks that night.

A posh place to eat clean street food and listen to great music. That’s 12 Monkeys Music Hall & Pub’s drama and it works. The food is great, the ambiance is cool, the location is centric and the music is brought to you by people with good taste.  What more could you ask for?
